Edith “Sue” Dowling Hemby Stringfield lost her 15 year battle with Alzheimer’s/Dementia and went to be with the Lord on August 30, 2021 at 4:34 p.m. Sue was born in Dialville, Texas on February 7, 1939 to Willard Dowling and Billie Lou Watts Dowling.
She was the oldest of 8 siblings: JoNell Henson, Danny Dowling, Carol Wayne Dowling, Patricia Morgan, Debra Schmidt, Mark Dowling and Donna Dowling.
In 1956, Sue married the late Eddie Hemby of Palestine, Texas and had a daughter Suzanne Hemby Meier of Round Rock, Texas. Sue later married her husband of 51 years Robert Stringfield in 1970. They lived together in Whitehouse, Texas until her passing. She and Robert had one son, Lee Stringfield of Bullard, Texas. After losing her mother to cancer, Sue also raised her younger sister Debra Dowling Schmidt of Elkhart, Texas. Sue was known for her sewing ability and won first place in a Singer sewing contest in Palestine. She was also known for her cooking abilities and made the best pie-both coconut and chocolate in the universe. She worked at L&L Shoes and later for her mother-in-law Anne Hemby at Anne’s Nursery. Sue worked at Farris’, the Charles Shop, the Berry Patch and Flournoy’s Furniture in Palestine, before she and Robert became self-employed owning a Borden’s Dairy Distributorship. Sue and Robert later moved to Tyler, Texas where she was a top seller for World Book Encyclopedia for several years. She then worked for JC Penney’s as an interior decorator until she retired.
Sue is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Danny and Mark Dowling, sister Donna Dowling, and step son Bobby Joe Stringfield.
Sue is survived by her husband of 51 years Robert Stringfield. Daughter Suzanne Hemby Meier and husband Kevin, their daughters Katie Meier Syring and husband Ryan, Dr. Kristen Meier Lawrence, husband Zach and great granddaughter Elizabeth Anne. Son Lee Stringfield, wife Amy Clinard Stringfield and their daughter Camryn Grace Stringfield. Her sister Debra Dowling Schmidt, husband Dobby Schmidt, their daughter Staci Schmidt Wolf, husband Adam and son Tripp. She is also survived by her brother Carol Wayne Dowling, sisters JoNell Henson and Pat Morgan. The family will be having a private memorial service at a later date.
