James Calvin Finch, 77 of Tyler, beloved husband, Dad, and Papa Bear went to be with the Lord on April 5, 2024 after a brief illness. James was known by all his family and friends as a kindhearted man with a servant’s heart. He cared for everyone he knew, displaying his love through numerous acts of kindness. This included mowing the neighbor’s yard, helping friends after a loss with a loved one, or making his famous banana pudding to cheer someone up. His selflessness inspired those around him to do the same. A simple phone call to check on family and friends was a part of his daily routine and a trademark good deed.

James was born in Deport, TX but grew up in Blossom to parents, Roy Monroe and Ruby Burchinal Finch. He was the youngest of eight children. James graduated from Blossom High School in 1966. In his adult years he was active in coordinating class reunions for the 1965-1970 classes.

James’s work career spanned 40+ years as a counter parts salesman at W. C. Supply, Bob Singer International, and Automotive Parts.

James married the love of his life, Phillis Lane, and together they made their home in Tyler, Texas. They had a loving marriage for over 43 years and were blessed with two children, Roy and Rachel.

He is survived by his wife, Phillis; son Roy C. Finch and wife Audrey, and their two children Carter and Ryan; daughter Rachel Finch, all of Tyler; sister, Martha Nell Thompson of Blossom; and a host of extended family and friends. He is preceded in death by two brothers: Roy M. Finch, Jr (Sonny Boy) and Marlin R. Finch (Buddy) and four sisters, Ruth Marie Miller (Ree), Myrtle Lou Chumbley, Celita Joyce Miller (Joy), and Wanda Smith.

Visitation will be held Friday, April 12, 1:00-1:30 pm at Rose Heights Church in Tyler, TX . The Celebration of Life will follow afterward with Bo Richardson and John Wisener, II presiding. An additional Celebration of life will be in Paris, TX at United Pentecostal Church (Fellowship Hall) on Saturday April 13 at 1:30 pm for those friends and family living in that area with nephew Donald Preston presiding.
