Shirley Barton Preston

A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered.

On April 17th, 1943, Shirley Barton Preston was welcomed into the world and instantly made it a better place with the love and kindness she left behind everywhere she went. She peacefully took her last breath on September 6th, 2021, at age 78. Although Shirley's life ended before we were ready, the time she spent here was full of joy and incredible memories.

She is survived by her loving beloved husband, Robert Henry Preston (Sr.), who was her whole heart. She is also survived by her daughter, Cheri Lynn Preston, her son, Robert Preston (Jr.), grandkids Jordan Troxell and Lauren Preston, great grandson, Liam Troxell, and brother, Richard Barton. She had an abundant number of other family members and friends who will miss her dearly.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Mozell Pool Whitmer, father, James Walker Barton and brothers, Roy Butler and Robert Barton.

Her family meant more to her than anything else in the world, and was endlessly proud of her children and grandchildren. Along with being a loving and doting wife, mother, and grandmother, she also absolutely adored her two dogs, Scarlette and Bean. She had such a warm, welcoming presence that anyone who knew Shirley was touched by her kindness, humor, loving soul, and unforgettable smile.

Mrs. Preston and her husband were high school sweethearts. Shirley went to Marshall High School, participated in the Pep Squad, and eventually went on to be a beautician. Mr. Preston enlisted in the Navy in 1958. She later married and joined him, traveling around the world for 20 years while he served.

On August 19th, 1977, Mr. Preston retired from the Navy. During the Retirement ceremony, Shirley was given special recognition for being the perfect military wife, describing her strength and loyalty during his journey through the military and deployments. They decided that for her supporting Mr. Preston all those years and never wavering, she too deserved a certificate of retirement. Mr. and Mrs. Preston were married 60 years and 8 months, providing strength and support to the other along their journey. Anyone would be lucky to have a love story and a love as strong as theirs was, and still is.

Shirley was a force of nature, yet calm and collected. She carried herself gracefully and made an incredible impact on the people in her life. There are no words to describe how deeply she will be missed.

Shirley never liked being the center of attention, therefore, there will be a private service conducted at Rose Lawn Memorial Park.

Thank you to the staff of CHRSTUS Trinity Mother Frances for making her last moments comfortable, and for being so involved with her and her husband’s well-being.

"When we lose someone we love, we must learn not to live without them, but to live with the one they left behind." -Unknown.

Shirley, your life was our blessing, and you shall never be forgotten.
