Virginia Lee Johnson Jones of Houston went to be with the Lord Tuesday, October 1, 2024. She was 100 years old.
Born in Laredo, Texas, on November 21, 1923, to Randolph Morton and Lillian Blassingame Johnson. She grew up in Edinburg, Texas, graduating from Edinburg High, where she would later go on to teach for 11 years. After leaving her teaching position in Edinburg, she applied for a position through DODDS (Department of Defense) where she taught in Japan at Yokota High School, Yokota Air Base for 12 years. She then returned to Texas to teach at John F. Kennedy High School for 3 years. Still loving adventure, she decided to travel to South Korea and through DODDS taught at Taegu High School for 5 years. After leaving South Korea she retired to Houston, Texas, residing at Clarewood House. During her years in Japan and South Korea, she traveled extensively in Japan, Southeast Asia, Africa, Philippines, Korea, and Peoples Republic of China. All in all, she traveled to as many as 73 countries. She also traveled throughout the United States and Mexico during her lifetime.
After retiring, she devoted her time to Bellaire Methodist Church where she worked as a volunteer in the office and various other areas where she was always willing to help. She also substituted in Stafford ISD well into her 90’s. Virginia was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma-Beta Eta Chapter where she held various offices and chaired committees. Between the ages of 90-95, she volunteered countless hours at a Houston warehouse where she lovingly repaired books in a program called “Books Between Kids”. Hundreds of volunteers would work in the warehouse packing books to be delivered to many elementary schools so children could take as many as six books home to keep. Virginia had a servant’s heart and was loved by many. She completely loved all the people that God brought into her life.
